Female voices + Splinter Sessions

10/11
17:00 - 23:00

A composed evening at two different locations. In the Ryelandtzaal it’s about the basis of all music: the voice, and more specifically the female voice. Harmonies, reverberation and concordant singing fill the church of the former Theresian monastery. At the same time, in De Snuffel there is the resurrection of the Splinter Sessions, which guarantee an avant-garde mix between post-rock, classical and free impro.

NYX Electronic Drone Choir & Lynn Cassiers

The London-based NYX wants to redefine the role of the traditional women's choir by exploring the full spectrum of the collective voice as an instrument. For this they use new vocal techniques and live electronics. As a so-called "drone choir", they create soundscapes with both electronic and acoustic textures. NYX also regularly develops creations with other singers such as Gazelle Twin, Hatis Noit and Iona Fortune. Exclusively for AMOK, they join forces with vocalist / electronics wizard Lynn Cassiers. The concert in the Ryelandtzaal consists of two parts; a set from NYX and a piece with Lynn Cassiers as guest.

Chantal Acda: Pūwawau

Six music compositions. Six researchers. One choir. One narrator. One ensemble. For years, singing has been the reflective space of Chantal Acda (Isbells, Sleepingdog, True Bypass). In this music performance she investigates the connecting power of singing and questions our voice. Together with the Dutch chamber choir NXT and trusted musical companions, she immerses you in a subdued and ever-sparkling world. Valgeir Sigurdsson, well-known for his work for Björk and Feist, arranges this performance. Josse De Pauw wrote the narrative for this unique piece.

Harmonies, electronics & avantgarde

Lily Joel

Lynn Cassiers has an enchanting voice, with which she unabashedly whispers to you and then unleashes to full effect. Keyboard player Jozef Dumoulin is a dormant volcano, discretely indispensable as a kind of deceptive "silent force". Together they go as Lilly Joel in search of their own unique sound. For their remarkable sound universe they pick influences from contemporary classical music, minimalism, avant-garde, impro and electronics. Lilly Joel takes you on a fabulous and fragile journey, and could easily be the perfect soundtrack for a cult series such as Twin Peaks. In a scoop, at AMOK, , Jozef Dumoulin will also play the organ for the first time in this duo performance for the very first time.

Transtilla

Transtilla are Frisian musicians Romke Kleefstra and Anne-Chris Bakker. For the past ten years they have worked together in the trio Kleefstra | Bakker | Kleefstra and the group Tsjinlûd. In the spring of 2019 the well-received debut album by Transtilla was released on the German Opa Loka Records. Their drone ambient, for which they start from free impro, is expressive and builds on a constant subcutaneous tension.

Ben Bertrand & Otto Lindholm

Ben Bertrand edited melodies for bass clarinet with a battery of effect pedals for his masterfully beautiful album NGC 1999. This way he created unearthly dreamy compositions with a big nod to minimalists such as Steve Reich and Terry Riley. At AMOK he performs the beautiful minimalist piece by Gavin Bryar in a duet with double bass player Otto Lindholm (Piloot) The Sinking of the Titanic.
